Bluff, New Zealand looks toward a very cold continent.
Visual Viewpoint: Antarctica is Somewhere Over the Horizon
This entry could also be filed as one of my “visual viewpoints” you may have seen in earlier posts.
In Christ Church, New Zealand, where many expeditions to Antarctica begin, there is a facility that gives tourists a chance to experience what it might be like to be an explorer there. In one room they give you heavy jackets and then plunge the temperature below freezing and turn on the wind machines. We decided that we’ll have to pass up that continent on our list of places to go. Too cold.
So when we got to Bluff, New Zealand, the southern-most land on which we’ve stood, we looked out over the ocean and could imagine it was very cold somewhere, but not where we were standing. There it was a most pleasant day in January (their summer).
